This event is fast approaching and should see the hopeful debut of the Sd.Kfz. 222 armored car. The event is held on the 13th - 14th of August at the Iola Old Carshow Grounds. Set up for vendors and reenactors will start Friday night. The venue is very open with little natural shade so please plan accordingly. For any additional information please see the event website: iolavms.com/
Authenticity and Theme:
To accommodate the heat, and to add interest to our public presentation, I propose that we, as a unit, aim to portray the 3rd Panzergrenadier Division during the Salerno landings in Italy during 1943. From what I have read, the 3rd had at least one battalion on the front lines during the invasion. The Salerno landings were the Allies' first major invasion onto mainland Europe and marked the beginning of the assault up the Italian "boot". However, they are largely overshadowed by the Allied invasions at Normandy and Anzio in 1944. I believe it would be fun for us to research up on the battle to educate the public on one of the generally lesser known invasions of WWII.
Uniform:
At this time German soldiers were seen sporting a mix of surplus tropical uniforms originally made for the Afrika Korps along with continental and HBT items. The following items can be worn in any combination, though individual research is strongly suggested in order to retain an authentic look.
DAK and tropical uniforms/equipment
HBT reed green uniforms
Wool uniforms: m40-m43 models recommended
Italian Camo: please limit one item per person.
Please post any questions, comments, or suggestions regarding this event below.
