Currently our unit has a BFONG (backward firing only non-gun) MP-40 for use as a squad leader weapon. Ours is one of the legacy builds that Schossler's Supply Room produced in previous years. It does a great job of firing blanks though they can be hard to procure as there is only one source. Efforts to begin reloading these special 9.3 mm blanks are ongoing. Note the SSR MP-40 has a longer looking overall barrel because of the extra receiver space in front of the magazine. The bolt moves back and forth in that space and the backward firing blanks shoot gas through the gun using gas tubes redirecting the gas to the muzzle. My grips are AGM grips as they fit really nice with minor modification and the ones that came with it were awful fitting. I also installed the upgraded muzzle nut and blank adapter sold by Atlantic Wall Blanks. It looks nicer.
Another option if you have the desire is to look into Indianapolis Ordinance as they build a BATFE approved forward firing design that also uses the 9.3 mm ammo. Just search engine their site. They will build it for you though they only advertise the kit for do-it-your-selfers. They also make other weapons such as the PPsh-41 and 43. Please spring for the MP-40 though as you will not be happy as a German carrying a Soviet capture weapon. The primary reason is that any money saved on the procurement will be used up in extra blanks as those Soviet guns fire lots faster.
Here is a finished Indianapolis Ordinance MP-40 that resides now with 7th Panzer a "cousin" unit.
You'll need to source a parts kit and send it off to them. Instructions are on their site. Expect a $4,000 price tag or more when done.
Only other option I know is class III weapons and that's a whole other story.
